Epidiolex

Updated: Aug 7

There’s the pretty side to cannabis and then there’s..... wait lists, lost signatures, delayed approvals, specialty pharmacies, dosing issues, all resulting in dire consequences.

Epidiolex 🙋🏼‍♀️who’s heard of it?'

Cannabidiol, the active ingredient in in Epidiolex, is a cannabinoid that naturally occurs in the Cannabis sativa L. plant. Epidiolex oral solution is gluten free and contains cannabidiol at a concentration of 100 mg/mL. Inactive ingredients include dehydrated alcohol, sesame seed oil, strawberry flavor, and sucralose.

Epidiolex is indicated and FDA approved for the treatment of seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) or Dravet syndrome (DS) in patients 2 years of age and older.

Patients approved for this medication face a whole other battle. Will their insurance cover it? If their insurance covers it, can they find a pharmacy to supply it? If you find a supplier, will your liver function be in good enough range to take it?

Other than the obstacles, I think this could be a very good choice for patients who are able to jump through the hoops and get insurance approval. I think if given the option, I would choose the real thing over this medication and that's because of the inactive ingredients. Sesame seed oil is a seed oil that can cause inflammation within the body, strawberry flavor can be derived from anything, and a lot of patients are watching their sugar intake so taking them in medicine is not ideal. With that said, I don't think it's a bad option and I think the body is capable of detoxing what is bad for it.
